Spin stalls

Just a question I am curious on…are spin stalls required in training to become an Airline pilot? I have seen varying answers to this and was wondering what is the current correct answer.

Thanks!
Jack

Jack,

Depends how you look at it. Will you need to demonstrate spin recovery during your ATP/type rating check ride? No. Do airline pilots have a good working knowledge of what spins are, how to get into one and how to recover from one? Yes. That’s because at some point during a pilot’s training their instructor taught them.

Every pilot must know the basic definition of a spin, and how to recover from one, but technically only flight instructors are actually tested to physically demonstrate their ability to successfully recover from a spin. That’s the only time a pilot is required to demonstrate spin recovery.

Jack,

Spin training is required to be a flight instructor, but it is generally not part of training outside of that. I have done three in my life and that was plenty for me.
