Taxi Light

This might seem like a weird question but it’s something that caught my eye the last couple times I’ve flown commercially at night.

When planes are in queue or are facing each other head-on, I’ve noticed that the crews will turn off the taxi light, but I always wondered why. Is it out of courtesy for other crews and their passengers- the same concept with turning off high beams for oncoming traffic or is there something else to it?

Thank you!

Eric

Eric,

That’s exactly right. Taxi lights are pretty bright and having one blinding you is not fun. It’s called professional courtesy. On the subject one thing I know that’s happened to virtually every Capt is when you’re new and you’re being marshalled in inevitably you’ll forget to turn off your taxi light and the lead marshaller will either give you an X to stop or some will just cover their eyes with both hands. You’ll only do that once then never again.

I have had many firsts in these last few weeks, including the taxi light :man_facepalming:t2:

Adam,

Never say never. I probably have three of those incidents under my belt.
