Talking to Pilots in the Airport

Hey guys… We all see pilots whenever we fly airline - walking through the terminal, waiting for their flights, getting coffee, etc. Just wondering what you guys think is the best way for a student, CFI, or other aspiring airline pilot to approach a pilot in the airport and get a conversation started? What would you say if you were in our shoes? (Obviously assuming the pilot(s) do not appear to be busy preparing for a flight.) Thanks!

Ted,

Just walk up to us, introduce yourself and ask whatever questions you have. You will find that this is a very friendly industry and that most pilots are more than happy to talk and help answer questions from a prospective pilot.

Ted,

I don’t know a single pilot who doesn’t like to talk about flying (it’s actually a MAJOR character flaw. Just ask any of our non-flying friends). As Chris said feel free to come up, say hi and if you have questions ask.

That said please don’t try and impress with what you believe is your superior knowledge. Never works and it’s annoying. That and NEVER EVER critique a pilots landing! There are many factors involved in the process that may not seem immediately apparent. If a pilot slams in on that may seem like poor technique but there may have been new struts installed which needed to be stressed or some other highly technical thingy going on (wayyyy above your grasp). Regardless EVERY landing is exactly the way we planned it, perfect

Ted,

Unless you see a pilot rushing to get somewhere, it’s always a good time to stop and say, “Hi.” It would be helpful to ask how much time they have available to give the pilot a chance to break away when they need to.
