Religious concerns

Speaking of schedules, I’m a religious jew, that means I can’t work/fly on Saturday. Would the airlines possibly accommodate such a schedule? Especially for a new hire?
My second question is how’s the flying schedule work out for family life. I know this is a subjective question, but if anyone can share if they think it’s manageable or too hard? I have a wife and kid.
My third question is how am I supposed to support my wife and kid while at school? From what I understand, one can barely scrape funds for tuition costs, let alone living expenses. Did anyone else here go through school with a wife and kid? How did you do it?

David,

If you can’t work/fly on Saturday’s the rest of your questions are moot. The airlines make ZERO scheduling accommodations for religious practices. People have actually sued and the Supreme Court has upheld the airlines right not to. Interestingly my airline just hired an Orthodox Jew who’s father is a rabbi. Being Jewish myself I asked the obvious, he responded that was between him and G-d.

Alright! My hands are off this route! I thank you for your being frank. My next persuasion is Air Traffic Control. Will they accommodate Saturday? Any suggestions and tips on this career?

David,

You’d have to contact the FAA for more info: https://www.faa.gov/jobs/career_fields/aviation_careers/

David,

I think that you will run into the exact same issues in any union position, which includes Air Traffic Control.
