Real Answers from Real Pilots

Pilot replacement risk level

Wyatt here,

As technology advances, so do the times. What are the probabilities that technology could replace/reduce the need for pilots? Would the FAA put a restriction on this?

Many speculate about the use of drones in commercial aviation. I don’t believe the flying public will feel comfortable knowing there’s no one upfront (nor do I believe we’re there technology wise yet). That said pilots thought the same thing when they went from 3 pilots to 2 so I could be wrong. Your guess?

Adam,
That’s kind of what I was thinking. The public would not be comfortable with that. But I live in the Midwest where unfortunately people seem to resist new technology. But, I agree there should always be l someone manning the plane. I am going to be a commercial airline pilot one day, and its scary to think that there is a even a small chance we could be replaced.
