When flying do you use crash pads while on layovers such as overnight, or is it a thing basically for commuters who are not living near the base they work out of?

You have it exactly right, crashpads are for commuters. As a commuter I typically use my crashpad before a trip if I can’t get in day of or afterwards if I am unable to get home the night the trip finishes.
While on a trip the company pays for all hotels and transportation to and from. At United we tend to stay at Marriott/Hilton/Westin level hotels.
